EIMA: An Introduction to Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS)

The EIFS Industry Members Association (EIMA) is a Registered Provider with The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education systems. One-half (0.5) Continuing Education System (CES) Learning Units are earned for successful completion of this program. If you are an AIA member, this will be reported automatically to the CES. Certificates of Completion for non-AIA members are available on request.

This program is registered with the AIA/CES for continuing professional education. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using distributing, or dealing in any material or product. Questions related to specific materials, methods and services will be addressed at the conclusion of this presentation.

Attendees will learn:

  • A brief overview of the history of EIFS.
  • Background information on how EIFS became one of the most successfully tested exterior wall cladding systems in the construction industry. (Oak Ridge National Laboratory, NIST, and others)
  • The benefits associated with using EIFS.

EIFS "Doing It Right"

EIFS Doing It Right® is a national, standardized education and certificate program available from the Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry (AWCI). It is a two-day course that focuses on generic EIFS installations according to industry standards. Instruction covers the essential knowledge and techniques for correct EIFS installations and proper inspections. The content is based on industry accepted standards and best practices and is updated as the industry changes. The focus and basis of the generic instruction are class PB systems; both barrier and drainage, with an overview of class PI systems, direct applied exterior finish systems (DEFS) and acrylic finish over portland cement plaster (stucco). The program is geared to EIFS applications for new commercial construction.

There are three certificate categories, each with pre-qualifications:

  • Substrates and Efflorescence
  • EIFS with Drainage and Flashing
  • EPS Boards, Mesh, Basecoat and Finish Coat
