The power of EIFS in facilitating imaginative designs without compromising performance or longevity.
Project Overview
The Kaleideum Children’s Museum serves as a landmark cultural institution, physically and symbolically connecting Winston-Salem’s vibrant arts and cultural district to its historic civic core. At five stories tall and encompassing nearly 70,000 square feet, the facility redefines experiential architecture for families, blending learning, play, and art through dynamic, immersive spaces. The building’s design draws inspiration from the ever-shifting forms of a kaleidoscope, with angular geometry and bold color playing integral roles in both its visual language and visitor engagement. |

Why EIFS Was Chosen
The project’s ambitious exterior façade—defined by over 160 custom EPS foam shapes, each measuring 4’ x 4’—called for a cladding system that could balance design flexibility, thermal efficiency, and durability. Sto Corp.’s StoTherm® ci system with Stolit® Lotusan® finish proved to be the ideal solution for several key reasons:
Results
The use of EIFS on the Kaleideum Museum was critical in achieving the building’s architectural vision—creating a whimsical, engaging, and educational environment. It enabled the team to deliver a bold and sustainable façade that delights children and adults alike while standing up to the environmental demands of an urban setting. The project demonstrates the power of EIFS in facilitating imaginative designs without compromising performance or longevity.
- Complex Geometric Expression: EIFS allowed the design team to economically and precisely create the multifaceted façade. The lightweight EPS shapes could be fabricated offsite, easily installed, and manipulated into the desired angular forms—realizing the building’s kaleidoscopic concept with dimensional accuracy.
- Durable, Low-Maintenance Finish: The Stolit Lotusan finish mimics the self-cleaning properties of the lotus leaf. This super-hydrophobic surface repels water and resists dirt and biological growth, helping maintain the crisp, clean appearance of the museum’s white façade.
- Aesthetic Versatility: While the majority of the façade is finished in bright white to emulate smooth limestone, bold triangular accents in turquoise, lime green, fuchsia, yellow, and blue enliven the exterior. These vibrant features were coated with StoColor® Acryl Plus, chosen for its superior UV resistance and long-lasting colorfastness.
- Continuous Insulation & Energy Performance: The StoTherm ci system integrates continuous insulation, contributing to the building’s energy efficiency and helping the project meet evolving code requirements for thermal performance.
