EIMA Unites North American EIFS Industry to Develop PCR | LCA | EPD

The EIFS Industry Members Association   (EIMA) is spearheading a comprehensive initiative to develop a Product Category Rule (PCR), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS). In an unprecedented show of unity, 100% of American EIFS manufacturers — EIMA members and non-members alike — are participating in the effort, underscoring the industry's shared commitment to sustainability, transparency, and high-performance construction.

The resulting documentation will support green building certification, guide product selection, and help demonstrate EIFS's role in advancing energy efficiency and environmental performance in modern construction.

This PCR will cover all North America, with collaboration and funding support from the EIFS Council of Canada and ADEX Systems, Inc., a Canadian EIFS manufacturer and EIMA Board member.

To ensure scientific rigor and third-party credibility, EIMA has partnered with Smart EPD, a respected program operator for environmental product declarations, and TrueNorth Collective, an expert consultancy in life cycle assessment and sustainability reporting.

The effort includes development of a Product Category Rule (PCR)—a set of rules and guidelines that ensure consistent reporting across similar products—informed by a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to scientifically evaluate the environmental impacts of EIFS over its entire life cycle, from raw material extraction to end-of-life. These efforts will culminate in an industry-wide Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)—a third-party verified document that communicates transparent, comparable data on the environmental performance of EIFS products.

"This unified effort by the EIFS manufacturing community reflects our shared commitment to sustainable building practices," said EIMA President Jose Berlingeri, Sto Corp.. "By developing a PCR, LCA, and EPD specifically for EIFS, we are equipping architects and specifiers with the credible data they need to make informed, environmentally responsible decisions."

"By having this level of industry participation from the outset, the EIFS industry will have a complete set of data necessary for a robust, best-in-class, LCA and PCR," said Jeff Zeman, Principal of TrueNorth Collective.

"A robust PCR not only codifies the set of rules and methods used for LCAs and EPDS, but it will also stand up to scrutiny from architects, engineers and the sustainability community," added Anna Lasso, CEO and Founder of Smart EPD.

Smart EPD is inviting stakeholders to apply to participate in the development of the PCR for EIFS. If you are interested in being considered to serve on this PCR committee, please complete and submit this application.  Applications will be accepted until Friday August 8, 2025.
